Anatomical Pathology Technologist
Robert has worked as an Anatomical Pathology Technologist (APT) within the NHS for over 35 years and until retirement was Mortuary Services Manager for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. He has extensive experience in establishing temporary mortuaries following natural disasters, war crimes and genocide. He has deployed on behalf of Physicians for Human Rights, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, and the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, as lead technician on many missions to the Balkans, S.E. Asia and West Africa. He has assisted with forensic investigations into ‘the missing’ by the State Pathologist for the Republic of Ireland, with the examination of British military personnel killed in Iraq, and with the London bombings of 7th July 2005. The Scottish Executive has recently appointed Robert as their National Advisor on Mass Fatalities Body Storage Contingency Plans, in the event of a pandemic influenza outbreak. He is a founder member and current Chairman of the Association of Anatomical Pathology Technologists and is a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Public Health. He is an acknowledged author/contributor in the RIPH’s Handbook for APTs. He is registered with the Voluntary Registration Council. In 1999 he was awarded an MBE for Services to Pathology.
