Dr Peter Ellis
Director of Forensic Medicine
Dr Peter Ellis was until recently Director of Forensic Medicine at the Institute of Clinical Pathology and Medical Research in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia . He is responsible for the provision of forensic pathology services to the Westmead Coroner in western Sydney , covering nearly 10% of the population of Australia. He sits on many government committees, advising the New South Wales government on issues such as SIDS, deaths after anaesthesia, forensic pathology resources in NSW and Disaster Victim Identification. He is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney . He also lectures to trainees and detectives from New South Wales Police and Australian Federal Police as well as to Military Police from the Australian Defence Force. He has had extensive experience in all aspects of forensic pathology and has participated in programs to investigate crimes against humanity in Kosovo as well as being involved in war crime investigation in East Timor . He has advised the International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC) into forensic issues relating to the civil war in Sri Lanka . He participated in the DVI program after the first Bali bombing in 2002. He was the lead pathologist for the Australian Federal Police team that attended and initiated the international DVI program in Thailand after the 2004 Asian Tsunami. He has participated in ongoing training programs for Australian and South-East Asian police forces and pathologists in matters relating to DVI and forensic pathology.
