Gerald Caplan
Dr Gerald Caplan has had a varied career as teacher and scholar, political and social activist, public policy analyst and political pundit. His activities encompass Canada and the Third World, particularly Africa. With an M.A. in Canadian studies and a Ph.D. in African history, Dr Caplan has worked as a university teacher, director of the CUSO program in Nigeria, national director of the New Democratic Party, co-chair of both the Task Force on Canadian Broadcasting and the Royal Commission on Learning (Ontario), and a well-known commentator on both Canadian and international issues. He is the author of Rwanda: The Preventable Genocide, prepared for an independent international commission appointed by the Organisation of African Unity. His most recent assignments have been for the United Nations Office of the Special Co-ordinator for Africa and the Least Developed Countries (OSCAL) and for the Economic Commission for Africa. He is the co-ordinator of ‘Remembering Rwanda’, an international initiative to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Rwandan genocide.
